Man Cave Redux

The view from the loft entry hatch - the brightness on the right is one of the two Velux windows in the roof. I have the blinds permanently drawn when I am not up there to prevent ‘sunning’ on the spines of the books in the library.

Another view - this time showing the table to better effect. Under the large brown throw are my various gaming mats and under the table itself is a whole pile of boxes of figures from Eric’s collection

As it gave me a lot of pleasure to tidy up I thought it only right and proper to share the fruits of my labour so here it is - the new and improved man cave! Actually it is not that much different from before - no major layout changes, just a major reshuffle of the contents - but it is good to see all the same.

The smaller unit on the right hand side of the central storage unit contains a selection of boardgame pieces earmarked for various projects as well as figures for painting at some point. I also keep my basing supplies and odd bits and pieces for modelling at some point. My work station is by the window and the gaming table is 5ft by 3ft and currently has a whole pile of Command and Colours Napoleonic blocks awaiting a new home. There is also the copy of the complete Kurz and Allison prints - the copy that had some plates removed - that I intend removing the remaining pictures from at some point.

It is a very restful place to work and indeed, just sitting up there and chilling with some music is also a delightful way to pass the time.

  3. Excellent! Well played, young sir - a cheerful, relaxing place to spend time!

You are far too young to remember this, but Spring cleaning and tidying always reminds me of an incident in the old black-and-white "Whacko!" TV series, when I was a kid, which starred Jimmy Edwards as a rather sadistic boarding-school headmaster. At one point, the Assistant Head, Mr Pettigrew, burst into his office and said, "Headmaster - oh, Headmaster - we've had the kitchens cleaned, and guess what? - we found there is a window in that wall next to the ovens!"

That sounds uncomfortably like my garage, in fact. Anyway - brilliant man cave, David - inspiring.

  5. David,

Now all you’ve got to do is keep it that tidy!

    A great job, well done!

    All the best,

    Bob

  6. It looks a lot more spick and span than my little room in our barn. It is a 12’ square partition which handily holds a fairly big table. Unfortunately, due to dust and potential critters all my paraphernalia is in plastic containers while books are kept in the house. Therefore my wargaming is always begun with a solemn procession from house to barn (looking round nervously for bigger critters if it’s night).

  7. Hi Jonathan,

Many thanks old chap - much appreciated!

I want to try and keep it at this state of tidiness - mainly so that I have space to think without feeling guilty!

All the best and take care,

    DC

  8. Hello there Maudlin Jack Tar,

It most certainly is! With the windows open it is quite airy and is a great place to think.

    All the best,

  9. Hello there Mr Manley,

It was not really in a bad way as a lot of the tidying you cannot really see but trust me, it feels a whole lot better now that it is done and I hope to keep it that way, games notwithstanding!

    All the best,

  10. Hi MSFoy,

Many thanks old chap! I am sure I saw Jimmy Edwards in a film as a headmaster attempting to cane a number of boys with a 20 ft long cane!

It is a great place to just let the mind wander where it will.

    All the best,

    DC

  12. Hi Bob,

I want to try and keep it tidy if I can - it usually is to be fair - as I find it better for ‘lofty contemplations”.

    All the best,

    DC

  13. Hello there Steve8,

The only critters I have to worry about are of the domestic feline variety and they are curiously uninterested in the loft - which is probably just as well!

    All the best,

    DC

  15. Hello BigLee,

Overall it does not look very different as much of the reorganising was behind the scenes in boxes and folders. It was hugely satisfying though and was a great weight off my mind!

    All the best,

    DC
