Naval Reinforcements - The New and the Old Part 3

The next instalment of new ships belongs to the Royal Hellenic Navy. Greece lost much of her small fleet in the early stages of the German invasion in 1941 but the remnants had an active war serving with the allies. The Averof was used on convoy duty in the Indian Ocean whilst the V.Olga (a nearly exact copy of the British G/H class destroyer) served in the Mediterranean. Her sister ship was sunk in harbor and refloated, repaired and recommissioned in the German Navy as ZG.3 Hermes. The flanking ships in the picture are the ex RN Flower class corvettes handed over in 1943.

These are very nice ship models - great job on the painting.

I'm not familiar with the Axis and Allies ship line - can you tell me what scale it's in?

Hi Jmilesr,

The ships are scaled at 1/1800th with the aircraft at 1/900th. The models come ready painted and are made from a plastic/rubber type material. I have always based mine on artists mounting board with a name label and a national naval endign just to finish the model off. Usually I allow 1cm around the length and width of a model and the base has the advantage of allowing hit markers to be carried around with the model thereby negating the need for paperwork.

The paint job varies from model to model - some are far better than the others!

All the best,

I like them, well done

I will have to complete my Med collection with these in 1/3000

Hi Geordie,

The Greek fleet is one of pure indulgence but the Averof is such a nice model I could not resist it. I have the Greek navy in 1/3000th for the Balkan Wars and she figures prominently in that - the Turks were in mortal dread of her in 1912 for sure! The 1/3000th models are Navwar by the way.

All the best,
