Napoleonic Basing Conventions

I was delighted to receive my order from Warbases this morning so after having taken all necessary precautions - opening and disposing of the Jiffy bag and then hand washing - I was able to take a look at what I had ordered and more importantly, how it would work with the Del Prado Napoleonic collection and also the Spencer Smith ACWs.

I messed around with a few variations on a theme as the pictures will show.

This is what I call ‘Command and Colours Standard’ where the infantry are 4 figures strong, the cavalry are 3 and the artillery is a gun and two crew.

The above is the projected ‘Portable Napoleonic Wargame’ standard whereby an infantry unit has 6 figures across two bases, cavalry have four and a gun and the two crew are on separate bases.

I am really pleased with these bases and will certainly order some more in the above sizes. I will also add the following - 75mm x 25mm, 25 x 25mm and 75mm x 50mm. I plan to paint these in due course using Humbrol Satin Mid Green 131 but I plan to do something with the interior of the base that is in line with what I have planned for the hills.

David,

The bases look great, and give you a lot of flexibility. Being able to use your collection for different rules is a real force multiplier.

All the best,

Bob

Hi Bob,

I am really pleased to have the flexibility of the individually based figures in conjunction with the sabots. As you say it is a real force multiplier.

I will be painting these once I have got the figure bases dealt with.

All the best,

DC

Hi Dave,
I rather like the look of the unpainted bases. They look nice and neat, like 3D game pieces. I don't think painted bases would add any realistic, which is not the look you are going for anyway. Of course it's your call.
Take care!

Hi Chuck,

Funnily enough I have been having a rethink about painting the bases but for quite a different reason. I am not sure if I have enough paint left to cover them! Seriously though, due to the current situation I am not sure if I will be able to get anymore in for a while.

I need to prioritise the figure bases first.

Take care in your part of the world!

All the best,

DC

Hi David -
It might be interesting to see these sabot mounted units 'in context' (i.e. in table top action) as you have them here just to check out the look. As shown they look pretty OK 'as is.'
Cheers,

Hi Archduke,

I plan to have a look on that basis later today. To be honest i am thinking that leaving them as they may well be a good idea as i plan to use them for desert based action in due course so it will save me having to tackle two sets.

All the best,

DC
