Colonial, Age of Sail and Pre Dreadnoughts

Artillery, a limber and a priceless wagon - for which I will look to source some Oxen rather than horses.

I am opting to use the 40mm by 20mm base size on the right rather than the smaller version.

What a couple of weeks it has been! Maison Crook is currently in a state of upheaval as we are knee deep in decorating the master bedroom, landing, stairs and hall - complete with a new carpet, bed and rearranged lighting. Luckily our son is an electrician by trade so all of the lighting and sockets have been well covered.

Needless to say, this has all been more than a little distracting….

On the gaming front it has been a period of reflection and reorganisation, with a few little additions along the way.

To begin with, the Mike’s Models 15mm unpainted Colonial collection has arrived. I am really pleased with this lot as although there are more Zulus than I will need, there are a couple of guns and a wagon included, along with more Boers.

The age of sail has once again been sniffing around the creative edges so to speak. John Armatys came up with a Gridded Naval Wargame inspired set of rules for the period which I shall be trying out at some point (Messrs Fox and Huband should be doing so this evening). It has made me look at the way I fight actions during the period and without exception this means grid based system - Wooden Ships and Iron Men, Flying Colours, Fighting Sail etc. I have managed to acquire a copy of Serpents of the Seas which is volume 2 in the Flying Colours series and covers smaller actions from the AWI and the war of 1812. Needles to say, the requisite parts of the library have added a couple of suitable tomes - more of which when they arrive!

For a variety of reasons the Russo Japanese naval war is currently front and centre in my thoughts, not only because of the excellent game I took part in last week but it is also a period I need to get a firm grip on from a technical and gaming perspective. Again, a modest selection of choice titles have been sourced to help with this. I have decided how I am going to game this in respect of the models but you will have to wait to see how.

Nice to see some MM colonials, I know they are not to everyone's taste but I rather like them, they have a real charm about them.

An interesting selection of projects.

Mark -
Sounds like a good week for thought and contemplation - of war gaming matters of course.
Small point; if you have more Zulus than you need, then you have JUST ENOUGH Zulus. If you have any at all, you can never have too many Zulus.

Hi Donnie,

They certainly have charm and I was fortunate to secure some opposition for the extensive amount of British. With luck I should be able to get at least four armies from the collection.

All the best,
